Children’s Literacy and Reading News Roundup – 18 May
This week’s children’s literacy and reading news round-up, brought to you by Jen Robinson’s Book Page and Scrub-a-Dub-Tub, a Reading Tub blog, is now available at Jen Robinson’s Book Page. This week Jen Robinson and I found lots of news about literacy & reading-related events; raising readers; literacy and reading programs and research; 21st century literacies; grants, sponsorships & donations; and other new resources. Don’t you love the bookworm?
Interestingly enough, we had already plugged in some articles about reading aloud … then along came this interesting Op/Ed piece about the lost art of reading aloud in yesterday’s New York Times.
- Shannon Sutherland shares stories about the relationship between conversation and reading in her article Setting the Stage for a Lifetime in Love with Reading. (National Post)
- Jim Gibson’s article about how reading aloud to children has benefits that go beyond language. (Canadapost.com)
It is interesting to read these two articles with the NYT essay by Verlyn Klinkenborg that distinguishes listening aloud from reading aloud.
Jen also links to a Literacy R Us post that offers answers to the question What is Literacy? Check it out, then let us know what you’re favorite answer is.
It’s hard to believe that May is almost June and Memorial Day is this weekend. As Jen mentioned, we’ll be enjoying the holiday with some books … Jen most likely warming up for MotherReader’s 48 Hour Book Challenge. If you haven’t signed up, you’ve still got time. One of these year’s I’ll make it … maybe the 10th anniversary celebration!
This week’s Nonfiction Monday roundup is at the Allen County Public LIbrary (ACPL) Mock Sibert blog. Here’s the link.

What is Literacy? My answer: Literacy is key to communication.
Okay, this is my hobby horse, but communication is so important! We communicate by receiving and giving messages. We receive information by listening, reading, viewing, feeling. We send information by writing, moving, making music, making images, talking, expressing, creating, organizing media etc. I believe that being literate is being skilled as a communicator, and preferably in all ways we can.
And reading is key to so much of communication.
