Children’s Literacy and Reading News Roundup – 13 July

2009 July 13

jkrROUNDUPThis week Jen Robinson is hosting our children’s literacy and reading news round-up.  The roundups are brought to you by Jen Robinson’s Book Page and Scrub-a-Dub-Tub, a Reading Tub blog.  Jen and I collected plenty of content for you about literacy and reading-related events; raising readers; literacy and reading programs and research; 21st century literacies; grants, sponsorships and donations; and other new resources. We hope you’ll find some useful information.

Even with the holiday, vacations, and the slow-down that comes each summer, there are plenty of noteworthy tidbits. One of the themes that we continue to see repeated – and which we love to repeat – is the idea that reading with our kids should be fun.

Jen takes the theme of making reading fun over at Booklights, too. This morning she’s talking about (and looking for your ideas on) book series with adventurous girls.

Last but not least, before you head over to In Need of Chocolate for the weekly Nonfiction Monday roundup, be sure to stop by I.N.K. Linda Salzman posts a summer repeat from Kathleen Krull reminding us that dormant readers love nonfiction.

Thanks, Terry! Seems like we were both kept pretty busy adding these links. But I do agree with you – it’s wonderful to see so many people out there talking about keeping reading fun for kids. Great add with the I.N.K. post, too.

PS. Link to the roundup at start of your post isn’t correct. (It has month 06 instead of 07): https://jkrbooks.typepad.com/blog/2009/07/childrens-literacy-roundup-july-13.html

Great info! The thing we always forget is the fact that kids like adventure–and reading can give them that. If we provide them with books which are of interest to them, not only will students be excited to read, but they will grow into avid readers in the future.
